The 6th running of the G3 Clásico Angel Contreras Mejía, a stakes event for 2-year-olds honoring Rancho San Antonio’s founder and co-owner, served as a showcase of the talent and class of RSA breds. The 1,400 meter race brought together the most talented 2-year-old colts and fillies who battled for the over $300,000 DOP purse, plus 3 $50,000 credits towards the upcoming Rancho San Antonio 2014 yearling Sale.
Ansiosa, a bay 2 year-old filly by Caribbean Champion and Dominican racing legend Sicótico out of Dixie Wildcat (by Forest Wildcat) and bred by RSA, broke awkwardly but immediately took control after the initial urging of rider Odalis Severino and established a 1 length lead at the quarter pole with a blistering 22 1/5 seconds. The talented Panelista, also by Sicótico, was Ansiosa’s escort throughout the race. The speedy filly continued her scorching pace posting fractions of 45 2/5 seconds for 800 meters, 1.11 4/5 for the 1,200 meter pole and stopped the clock in an excellent 1.25 flat for 1,400 meters. She was followed home by Panelista, Gotica de Miel and Circunspecto.
Ansiosa has proven to be a savvy purchase, being knocked down for only $185,000 DOP by the Establo La Aurora and her owners César Prieto, Ramón Contreras and Ricardo Contreras at the 2013 Rancho San Antonio Yearling Sale.
Ansiosa now compiles a record of 3 wins from 5 lifetime starts and has accumulated over $240,000 DOP in her brief career for her owners and leading Dominican trainer Eugenio Deschamps and Juan Jimenez. The filly is sure to be favored in the upcoming Clásico de Criadores-G1 for fillies that will be run in late November.
