TEMPESTAD, a 3-year-old colt by Caribbean champion Sicótico out of the G1 producer Blizz Honor, by Kissin Kris, returned to the winner’s circle on August 4, 2015 at Hipódromo V Centenario.
The colt’s connections changed tactics on this occasion and TEMPESTAD was asked to race from off the pace. ANSIOSA (an RSA bred by Sicótico – Dixie Wildcat, by Forest Wildcat) broke sharply and was immediately and foolishly pressured by barn-mate KAMIKAZE (an RSA bred). The pair blistered off the early fractions, setting-up the stretch run for eager TEMPESTAD, who drew away with authority by 3 ½ lengths. The official splits were 0.23 2/5, 0.46 4/5, 1:13 3/5 and 1:20 2/5. He was ridden by Luis Jimenez and is trained by Frank Pavonessa.
TEMPESTAD has ping-ponged owners throughout his life. He was purchased in-utero by Jesús García Fernández at the RSA 2011 mixed sale, and was bred in his name and foaled at Potrero Tresando. The colt was sent back to RSA as a yearling and was prepped for the RSA 2013 Yearling Sale, where he was consigned by RSA. The colt developed a mild splint and his owner retained him when his reserve was not met. Immediately after the auction RSA purchased the colt in a private transaction and several months later he was sold privately to the connections of Establo La Aurora. The colt won his debut race in the colors of Establo La Aurora and was claimed immediately claimed by Establo Sulum Racing Stud, the racing stable of the original owner and breeder.
The colt has had a productive career and now has a lifetime record of 6 wins in from 12 starts with earning in excess of DOP $950,000, while placing 2nd in the Clásico Francisco del Rosario Sanchez-G1 and 3rd in the Clásico Matías Ramón Mella-G1, the first 2 races of the DR Triple Crown.
TEMPESTAD is half-brother to the G1-winning filly ESMERALDA and multiple stakes-placed TIME TO TANGO. Has dam BLIZZ HONOR is now owned by Cap Farm, located within the Los Establos Complex of the popular Cap Cana Resort in eastern Dominican Republic.
